A great brunch or lunch spot in the Lower East Side with the freshest local ingredients (many from the Union Square Greenmarket!) at amazing prices. Everything you need for a low-key daytime date.

My boyfriend and I wanted to try this place after reading an article about it in the Wall Street Journal (online.wsj.com/article/S…), and we were not disappointed. The portions are hearty (perfect for him), and the bread is superb - crunchy on the outside, and light and full of airy pockets on the inside. The menu changes often, depending on what's found at the farm, but the Summer Pig Sandwich with braised pork belly, chocolate mint, your choice of jam, and cheddar, has been a recent hit. There are plenty of meat-free options, and the option to add a fried egg to any sandwich makes it a winner for an early lunch.

The prices prove that local, healthy foods can be affordable, and throwing smart combinations of ingredients into a sandwich makes the menu entirely approachable. Watching the chef take a whole head of kale out of the refrigerator to saute up in my breakfast sandwich just convinced me of Black Tree's authenticity. Watch out Quiznos.
